Texas Hill Country Resort offers family getaway from the busy city

This year I told myself I would travel a little more with my family. My mom, sisters, and I wanted a much-needed vacation for the summer. My son, nieces, and nephews wanted to get out the house and take a trip. We didn’t want the typical vacation filled with activities that would make us tired after the vacation. You know the ones that make you feel like you need a vacation from your vacation. We wanted a sanctuary. Our goal included finding a place we could unwind, relax and just enjoy the quality time bonding with each other and our kids. La Cantera Resort & Spa provided us with all of those features and much more.

Nestled in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, It took us about three and a half hours to get to La Cantera Resort & Spa. La Cantera Resort & Spa sits about 17 miles or 21 minutes outside of San Antonio. We realized after entering the resort we would be secluded from the rest of the area. The guard greeted us as we drove up, checked our reservation and sent us up a winding road as we enjoyed views of the hills and the extensive property we were about to enjoy. The property spans about over 500 acres.

Checking into the hotel
Check in started at 3 p.m. We arrived early. The staff let us get in our rooms early. The lobby area offers a nice seating area for guests, along with Bocado, a charcuterie, known for specialty smoked meats, small bites, and gourmet cheeses. The lobby bar called SIRE sits next to Bocado. The back of the lobby drew us in immediately with the view. The area gave us the feeling of tranquility with waterfalls, fire pits, a seating area, and beautiful views of the property. The staff brought us fresh baked cookies to welcome us to the resort after we settled in our room.

Accommodations for guests
We booked the standard room. One of our rooms came with a balcony overlooking the back of the property. Each room comes with a king bed or two queen beds. The resort offers many options for accommodations including junior suites, one bedroom suites, executive suites, and villas. The Villas sit separate from the hotel property for a more private setting. Adults staying at the resort can request to be on the adult only floor called Seven.

A standard room can run you from $161 to $300 a night or more depending on the time you stay. The daily rate becomes lower if you stay during the week. The hotel charges a daily resort fee. The resort fee includes free self-parking, Wi-Fi, a gym, a shuttle bus for guests that want to venture off the property, resort activities, and bottled water. The hotel also gives a 20 percent discount for golf practice facilities.

Amenities to make your stay enjoyable
There’s a pool for everyone in the family. The back of La Cantera Resort & Spa offers five pools including hot tubs in different areas around the resort. The kid’s pool comes with two small water slides. The family pool stays at four feet all around. The adult pool and Jacuzzi sits off below the main pool areas for more privacy and seclusion. The resort doesn’t provide any specific hours for the pools. The staff operates based on dusk and dawn. The pool opens at dawn and closes at dusk.

The resort hosts many family-friendly events for guests.  Every Friday and Saturday night the hotel hosts Sunset S’mores around the fire pit near the pool. The kids loved this event. They were able to make their own s’mores and sit around the fire pits. The resort hosts a Family Movie Night. My son enjoyed getting his blanket, popcorn and laying back on the lawn.

Kids Movie Night
The kids spread out their blankets ready to watch Frozen.

We enjoyed an event called ZooMagination. ZooMagination gives families live animal encounters.

The kids met Frank the parrot.
This sloth came into the country as part of an export rescue program for animals.

Other amenities on the property include a fitness center, game room/arcade, children’s camp, spa,  and shuttle. The shuttle takes you to nearby shopping areas and restaurants.

The resort’s ballroom and event facility sits apart from the main property. Many events took place during our visit including a wedding.

Restaurants to feed your soul
The hotel offers nine restaurants. You can explore the different restaurants and enjoy a new menu daily during your stay if you wanted because of all the variety they offer. You can also find weekly happy hours from 4 to 6 p.m. at Primero Cantina and Sweet Fire Kitchen.

French fries
The best food to order poolside is french fries.

Henrietta’s Market serves oatmeal, bagels, sandwiches and donuts if you want a quick breakfast in the morning. You can also buy other snacks and drinks.

You can buy smoked cheeses, meats and small dessert bites at Bocado.

The trip provided my family and I with a nice, relaxing escape from our busy lives. The staff made it a point to make our stay memorable. I highly recommend visiting the resort. The drive is short and the experience is worth it. You can enjoy a full list of activities that will accommodate you and your guests. I’d check the website to see if any there any discounted rates. If you decide to visit La Cantera Resort & Spa, please share your experience with me. Until next time, love, peace and food.
